Many marijuana enthusiasts do not know there are two kinds of marijuana, indica and sativa. One kind makes you happy (sativa) the other marijuana type (indica) makes you sleepy.

Indica marijuana types are the sleepy, pain relieving, sedate, and time slowing weed highs. These cannabis plants are often short, squat and bushy. Their marijuana buds are fatter and produce copious amounts of THC resin. More indica marijuana types are available now because indica marijuana plants are presumed to be easier to grow, have a heftier yield and finish much quicker than sativa cannabis strains.

The sativa cannabis plant is responsible for an uplifting, soaring spacey, giggly, appetite inducing marijuana high. Sativa is also a great weed strain at relieving clinical depression.
Unfortunately, sativa isn't found in large quantities. This weed strain is perceived to be more difficult to grow and yields much less than indica cannabis.
The sativa marijuana plant is often vine like. Growing very tall, lanky and nearly twice the size of a typical indica cannabis plant. Another perceived problem is sativa produces light fluffy marijuana buds.
Sativa cannabis strains take many more weeks to finish than indica cannabis types.
Sometimes almost twice as long.
Yet many marijuana enthusiasts love sativa weed strains more so than indica marijuana. Especially old time tokers who used to smoke weed back in the '70s when grass mostly came from sativa producing countries, such as Mexico and Columbia.

These strains had names like Columbia Gold, Panama Red, and Acapulco Gold. The majority of America's weed supply came from tropical South America countries where sativas grew plentiful.
And law enforcement was lax.

Though the war in Vietnam did create plenty of opportunities to smuggle in another sativa strain, Thai Stick.

Hippies were predominately smoking sativa marijuana from Mexico.
Clearly adding to their happy, creative, stress free lifestyle immensely.
As the War on Drugs focused its attention in South America, the flow of sativa marijuana types into the USA decreased dramatically. While more profitable easier to ship drugs such as cocaine were smuggled in. With all that remains is Mexican brickweed.

Efforts to grow sativa weed strains from marijuana seeds found in Columbia God, Panama Red or Acapulco Gold buds proved to be very difficult. As the growing season for ganja is much different even in warm sunny California compared to Columbia. However, growers did try to grow these sativa marijuana strains outdoors in their northern climates.

It wasn't until the introduction of indica from Afghanistan, which primarily grew their short squat cannabis for hash making. Afghanistan marijuana created a very harsh heavy dank smoke, making it incredibly harsh to inhale.

Thus Afghani growers would turn their indica marijuana into hash. American hash smugglers brought back with them marijuana seeds from the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan.

By breeding both pure indica marijuana (Afghani, Hindu Kush) with pure sativa (Columbia / Mexico) American marijuana growers were able to bring down the marijuana flowering time, while creating new outdoor weed strains in the process.

These strains were suitable for the North American outdoor growing climate.
Breeders creatng marijuana strains were not only looking for improved flowering time, but marijuana taste, yield, and of course, how great the high was. For many years they focused their efforts on indica marijuana strains. Catering to the marijuana grower marketplace that demanded fast turnaround.

Recent efforts to cater to more select cannabis enthusiasts desires for tasty toke with an amazing weed high has created numerous hybrids that create both an uplifting soaring spacey marijuana high while also locking a pothead to their couch.

The High Times Cannabis Cup recognizes the difference between indica and sativa weed types that their contest divides the two strains. Thus neither strain competes against each other.
