Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are an exciting new type of lighting for indoor marijuana growing with a number of new manufacturers coming out with LED grow lights. When it comes to marijuana seeds some growers are opting to choose to use these lights. LED lighting manufacturers make some pretty impressive claims about the performance of their products.

Does the hype live up to their claims?
No.
Quite honestly at this point of technology, that's all that I can recommend them for.

Why do I use LEDs?
Well for starters I think they're great for cuttings, marijuana seedlings and mother plants and I do recommend them for that. When it comes to starting marijuana seeds LED are fantastic. However they're not as good for marijuana flowering as other lights. Let's examine some of claims about LED grow lights so that the consumers can make an informed choice about whether or not to take the plunge. Firstly, the harder that you drive a LED the shorter its lifespan will be for growing marijuana seeds. Higher marijuana grow room temperatures also shorten the life of a LED.

A claim made by a few manufacturers is that LED marijuana grow lights put out no heat. This is very wrong!

If you have a 100 watt LED marijuana grow light, at least 80 watts will be heat. Higher watt LED lights will require air cooled or water cooled mounting. There's nothing magical that makes LED grow lights cooler than other types of lighting.

High power LED marijuana grow lights are, however, very efficient in dumping the heat off the lamp housing because of the aluminum heat sink. If a 250 watt bulb was mounted to aluminum heat sink then the bulb would also stay fairly cool.

It would be much easier on the consumer if all grow light manufacturers would just give the true power input to the LEDs just like makers of metal halide and high pressure sodium lighting systems rate the power of their products by the power input to the bulb.

How do marijuana seeds respond to LED lights?
LED lighting manufacturers try to back their claim that LED grow lights are 20 or 30 times better than HPS. If you're dealing with a LED lighting manufacturer or dealer hyping their product based like this walk away.

My 18 months using LED lights to grow marijuana seeds does not back these claims up. If you are a large marijuana grower about to drop thousands of dollars on LEDs, please, I urge you, ask them plenty of questions.
